Strelitzia reginae
Strelitzia reginae, commonly known as Bird of Paradise, is one of South Africa’s most recognisable and widely loved indigenous ornamentals. This evergreen perennial forms neat clumps of sturdy, upright, grey-green leaves that provide year-round structure and architectural appeal in the garden.
From late winter through spring, and often intermittently thereafter, mature plants produce the famous crane-like flowers in vivid orange with striking blue accents. These long-lasting blooms are excellent for cut flowers and attract pollinators, adding both beauty and ecological value to the landscape.
Adaptable and rewarding, Strelitzia reginae performs best in full sun to light semi-shade and well-drained, fertile soil. It is relatively drought tolerant once established and responds well to regular feeding and deep watering during active growth. This versatile plant is ideal for garden beds, borders, mass plantings, containers, and tropical-style landscapes.
