Ngongoni Grass
Aristida junciformis, also referred to as Wire Grass or Besemgras, is a robust perennial grass native to South Africa, valued for its fine, needle‑like leaves and airy seed heads that add movement and texture to landscapes. It forms dense clumps that sway beautifully in the breeze and provide a soft, natural aesthetic in garden beds, borders and meadow plantings.
This indigenous grass thrives in full sun and well‑drained soils, tolerating a range of conditions from wet clay to dry sand. Once established it is very drought tolerant, making it especially suitable for low‑water gardens, slopes, and erosion control.
Aristida junciformis also supports local biodiversity by offering habitat for grassland wildlife and contributes to natural, low‑maintenance garden designs. While it is not palatable for grazing, its durable habit and graceful seed plumes make it a favourite for naturalised and indigenous plantings.
