A popular landscaping plant. Until recently the native violet was referred to as Viola hederacea. However, research has shown that the commonly grown plant is different to the true Viola hederacea. They are very easy to grow, and a perfect solution for those shady areas where you need a low-maintenance, spreading groundcover. Although they mostly flower early in the season, they may bloom throughout summer, but usually not with the same splendor.

Excellent and interesting plant

I live in central London with a small urban back garden, zone 9. I bought a small pot of the Australian violet in summer of 2010, as a house plant. Since then it has been planted outside in the garden, where it thrived, even through light frosts (died back). It has been planted in partial/ semi shade (gets early morning sun only). Needless to say, I would not be without this plant now, proving interest for 3/4 of the year. Easy to control and pull up, if it gets too invasive. Highly recommended
